Beware of noise!

I have recently returned from a cruise on the Splendour of the Seas. My praise goes to the crew of this ship - they were fantastic, hardworking and friendly. No complaints with the state of the ship either - it was clean and the stateroom was better than expected. BUT...we had a very big problem with noise on board. As first time cruisers, we were unaware of the problem, but now know it is a problem well known by the cruise line. We were on deck 8 and had to endure the noise of furniture being moved and chairs being dragged along the wooden deck above us. Not only all day, but in the middle of the night too, when the cleaning crew started. If you're thinking of booking a cruise, avoid level 8 at all costs if you value your sleep! These are not cheap rooms either, so do check before you pay a lot of money to be kept awake night after night.

We were also on deck 8 and as first time cruisers not sure what to expect, but we also heard a bit of scraping noise above us but luckily for us, it was only for about 5 minutes and we could hear the hoover but then it was over and we heard nothing more, we were towards the back of the ship in cabin 8073. Some people say it is better to be in the cheaper lower deck cabins but I worried about noise from the engines - can you hear it more down lower?

We were more towards the centre/front of the ship (8526) - underneath the area closer to the bar - I guess that's why we had much more noise. I don't know about engine noise - only that we heard very little if any of it. But to be honest, even steady engine noise would have been preferable to the noise in our stateroom!

As first time cruisers you obviously were not aware of the need to pick your cabin very carefully to avoid noise, and any other factors that may upset you whilst in your cabin? It always pays to experienced cruisers BEFORE booking a first cruise. They would advise you on the cabin positions in general to avoid, along with many other things that a first time cruiser just would not have a clue about. Unfortunately, you learnt the hard way! Happy Cruising.

Thanks for the comment - had I known any experienced cruisers, I'd certainly have asked for advice and tips! Unfortunately, I don't know any, so wasn't able to. But here's the thing - I didn't even know there WERE pitfalls to be avoided on a cruise - and why would I? Most holiday companies nowadays offer a degree of honesty about locations and expected noise levels, so to experience totally unacceptable noise was quite a shock.
