Independance of the Seas versus QM2

In May myself, husband and two children (ages 8 and 6) went on Independance - what a fantastic ship!!!

. modern
. spotlessly Clean
. wonderful artwork
. magnificant Royal Promenade (you forget you are actually on a ship!)
. excellent food
. kind and efficient staff (cabin steward down to waiting staff .....)
. need I go on ....

A wonderful experience to cruising, the only negative is that we have set our benchmark high ....

In August we have just been on a 4 day trip to Hamburg on Queen Mary 2 - "the best Ocean Liner in the world ...." so they say.

On boarding QM2 we did not get the initial buzz and astonishment of the surroundings which we experienced on Independance of the Seas. The ship indeed did look magnificent, but inside we were a little disappointed. The ship is more of a floating museum to Cunard (OK for the American market). Each stairwell, wall, passageway was Cunard memorbilia, perhaps this could be limited to a few decks.

The cruise was a wonderful experience, especially when arriving in Hamburg - brass band and lots of people seeing the QM2 arrive.

The service in the Britannia restaurant was excellent, although in Kings Court (buffet style) the layout was a bit confusing, wandering from one section to another.

We did have a vision of sitting down to an outstanding "afternoon tea" - this did not happen, very disappointing - overcrowned and below average scones.

It was great to have the experience on QM2 but the Independance of the Seas have definitely won our hearts.

All I can say is Ditto. When my husband read your review he thought I had written it as you have had exactly the same experience as us. The QM2 was a ship we had always wanted to cruise on but we came off thinking thank goodness we only went for 4 days and not a 2 week cruise.

I have cruised on both Independence and QM2 and I think they offer a very good but totally different experience. If I was taking children of any age I would definetly choose Independence but as a couple I think QM2 superior. I could not fault afternoon tea and I loved the Cunard lectures at no extra charge but Royal Caribbean offer alternative entertainment which is first class. I will go on both again but for very different reasons as a totally different style of cruising both very acceptable especially as both are high class vessels.

We are all entitled to our opinions and a cruise is a VERY personal thing but to compare the Independence of the seas to the Qm2 is ludicrous...one is a liner the other is a fun factory.....I know which one I would choose....the one i would feel safest on......if you dont like a classy ship.....sail on something else. The Qm2 is not perfect but to be honest I dont think the perfect ship exists, ( apart from Qe2 of course!)

reading your comments, i dont think you have been anywhere near the independence of the seas. to call it a fun factory is rediculous. all royal caribbean ships offer fantastic service, first class dining and entertainment second to none. and the comment about feeling safe, again unless you've been on independence how do you know if you'd feel safe or not.

I do feel that you have made the same mistake as Collins of Hornchurch in this review. Firstly, by trying to do a comparison between two differing styles of ship, and secondly, by using a so called 'mini-cruise'(not Cunards description) to make that comparison. QM2 is not, and was never intended to be, a cruise ship; she is a liner, and as such her design differs considerably from the more popular glitzy cruise ships. Her large interior spaces are by design to suit her role as a liner. Her entertainment programmes are designed with the same philosophy. That is what she is good at and that is what most of us Cunard regulars appreciate. Of course Independence of the Seas is a fantastic ship, but it is a family cruise ship.

How right you are. I've been on the Freedon and Liberty the other 2 ships in the same class and they too beat QM2 hands down. QM2 is a huge and externally beautiful ship totally ruined by a corridor style interior with small confined open spaces even the largest ballroom at sea, It is a shame because it could be a great ship too and even maintain the white star service with a little better management of staff and facilities. When I wrote a bad review of my QM2 I upset a lot of people so we maybe should accept that we're maybe still too young for Cunard? Can't wait to jump onboard the Oasis...

couldn't disagree with you more - peoples' tastes are different and a good job too -QM2 is about class and we enjoy the liner style

You've said it! QM2 is about class - class distinction, on RCI ships there is no different classes and therefore all persons are treat the same. We went on the QM2 within its first five cruises and since then we have being on several RCI ships and i know what we would rather do. Personally i would not go back on the QM2 for free. The ship should be called Snobbery of the Seas!!!

didn't find that at all, surprised you felt that way. I'm certainly no snob but I do like luxury and that's what we had = if I had several kids I wouldn't do Cunard but I don't want to be surrounded with lots of kids these days - done that, got the t shirt!!- each to his own
