Cruise Reviews

It's huge, it's amazing, it's ever so exciting

Sailing on the inaugural cruise was always going to be exciting. The advertising blurb said it was the ''biggest passenger ship in the world'' and first sighting of this magnificent marine wonder was ''THIS IS HUGE''.
Huge and exciting - as I walked up the gangway I was absolutley gobsmacked and it didn't wane throughout the 12 day cruise to the Canary Islands, Lisbon and Vigo.
Independence of the Seas is truly an amazing ship. Its size is 'ginormous' the service matches that to a tee, add into the holiday pot the activities programme with interesting on-shore excursions and you have the mix for a wonderful ''floating hotel''. It's hard to know just where to start when I think of recommending this ship to prospective cruisers.
The opulence and stylish decor is remarkable along with the superb cuisine no matter whether you dine casually or more formally. The formal 3-tier dining rooms share a huge chandelier - ground floor is Romeo and Juliet, middle is Macbeth and top is King Lear - Shakespeare would have found plenty of inspiration in these discerning dining areas.
Casual dining offers in the Windjammer and I defy anyone to say they cannot find food to suit their palate in here, day or night. If you want to pay you can go for a more intimate evening in the Portofino and Chops Grille. We didn't try these as we were so happy with the formal evening dining in the King Lear and it was included in the price of our cruise. You could pay a small fee and eat in the Johnny Rockets which was American styled burgers etc.
Swimmers are spoiled for choice when it comes to taking a dip and sunbathing around the H2o area - and on the top deck you can play mini-golf, go up the Climbing Wall or do some water surfing - we didn't do any of these but heaps of people did and it seemed like a fun thing to do.
We appreciated the daily ''newspaper'' on our bed each night so we could have a bit of a browse before we went to sleep and had an idea what we would do next day - you would have to be on Independence of the Seas for six months if you did all the activities, exhibitions, seminars and demonstrations - the choice is absolutely fantastic.
We had a beauty spa treatment on Ladies Day and that was sublime - didn't make me any younger though.
Luxurious dip in the cantilevered whirlpool was another indulgence which I allowed myself - four times and heavenly it was too.
The Royal Promenade is a meeting place, around the shops, in the bars or watching a parade - you might think with 3300 passengers onboard this ship would be crowded but on our last morning I met people at our breakfast table who I'd never seen all cruise. This is indeed a ''floating village'' - one you will feel ''at home'' on quite quickly.
It's easy to say the service was superb - on this cruise it was out of this world.
I did feel a little pressured and uncomfortable about the ''tipping'' suggestions which came in a formal letter - I'd rather decide if I had enjoyed service and reward accordingly. I made enquiries about the ''tipping edict'' and was told the crew they were advising to tip were not paid a wage - just a small retainer for the month and the ''wages'' came from what the passengers gave them. This was confirmed by a ships official and my personal feeling is that the ship should pay the wages and the passengers pay for good service if they feel they've received it.
I have to say you cannot fault the service of crew at all levels - it is truly something you notice whether you are eating, relaxing, exerting yourself or just taking in the sights.
What impressed me the most about Independence of the Seas? Why did I ask myself that question? There is so much I am having trouble defining one thing - I'll say the FINE FOOD....... it was MEMORABLE for quality, variety, diversity and freshness. You will go along way before you find a match.
There is so much more I could tell you about our cruise but I know if this gets too long you'll lose interest. Go and experience it all for yourself. I've booked to go again in October 2009 - it won't come quick enough.

I am heartened by the support I have received in your comments about the unfortunate attitude of a person who found a platform to let off steam and show his inadequacies in life! I read the information which said comments would be checked out and not appear if they were offensive or hurtful.... never mind, my faith in human nature is restored..... I believe my review is a condensed version of what I would have liked to say but felt it would be a burden if any longer....... Independence of the Seas is grand and would appeal to any age, any socio-economic group and all in all it is a cruise lifestyle to remain with me forever.... thank you for your support.

take no notice of unknownsock, this is an excellent review of what we also believe to be a fab ship, we sailed on the 6th may cruise and had a amazing holiday, we were in a party of different age groups, and there was something for everyone, my only moan is that my husband and i put a few pounds on, but thats not royal carribeans fault its ours, for being greedy pigs with the wonderful desserts on offer, to good to resist , all in all a great cruise and as seasoned cruisers we have been with many other companies and this ship was the best, we have booked 2 more cruies such is our faith in this ship, that saddo unknownsock has probably never been on this ship, and has to get his kicks being insulting to others, grow up

This was an excellent review, but I thought that comments and answers were to be screened by the people running this site. The comments by 'Unknownsock' should never have been put up on the site. This person is obviously unbalanced and really we should pity him/her.

We have also had a fantastic holiday on this cruise, we were in a large party of different age groups, unknownsock is a sad insulting person who does not have the balls to put his name to his insults, in our party were a solictor, two doctors and other professional people, but it wouldnt matter if my family were dockers or labourers nobody has the right to be so rude to others, oh and my father was before retirement a top chef, and he found the food to be fresh and excellent quality, we all like different things, we loved the cruise and have 2 more booked, just because you didnt like it unknownsock dont spoil it for others, you really need to get a life,

To Claremont - Surrey. Thank you for your positive and encouraging comments on the cruise. I really did LOVE every single minute of it. I felt so chuffed to be there and to share it with a dear old lady friend of mine who had always wanted to cruise but never had.... we so enjoyed every aspect of it. Thank you for your supportive comments.

Merseydive, Nottingham, Manchester, Rhyl & Plymouth just really goes to prove my point. Independence is for the council house crowd. RCI made a big mistake in their choice of Godmother, they obviously, to reflect their target audience should have gone with Kerry Katona!!

As the author of this review - I would like to say i submitted it in good faith... it is my view of a wonderful cruise. I had no idea that people would write such horrid comments .... so unhelpful and hurtful. I think my ''taste'' in travel choices should not be attacked with such venom. If this continues I will NOT be wasting my time sharing my experiences if they are going to be ridiculed so callously. thank you to those who read them and hopefully they were helpful to genuine traveller/cruisers.

Mr/Mrs Ronberg, I would like to make it clear that I enjoyed your review very much - my comment was in your defence and directed at the unpleasant individual who calls himself "unknown sock" who for some reason has seen fit to post an abusive comment. Please don't be put off by these individuals because they are mercifully infrequent visitors to sites like this. I personally believe that your review will help many, many people - especially as the 'Independence' is a new ship and very few people have travelled aboard her. Thanks again and keep coming back. All the Best .... Tim.
