Couple Banned From Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

Website, MSNBC.com has this week published a story about a couple banned from travelling with Royal Caribbean Cruises. Brenda and Gerald Moran from Cleveland, USA, are experienced cruisers and loved the line – averaging at two cruises every year in the past three years, even buying the line’s stock.

Despite their love of the line, the couple did experience certain problems each time they went on a cruise – from being locked out of their own cabins to plumbing issues, which they itemised and detailed to Royal Caribbean, who then offered them discounts and onboard credits.  However, the story took a new twist in November when the line told the couple that they were no longer welcome on any RCI cruise ship – including the line’s subsidiaries Azamara and Celebrity Cruises.

Over the three years of sailing with Celebrity and Royal Caribbean, Brenda Moran had documented all the problems on her cruises – including her birthday greeting being delivered in the wrong stateroom and her husband being locked out on the balcony for three hours due to a door-latch jam. In September 2007 on an Alaskan and Northwest cruise, their room ended up with sewage all over the bathroom and carpet from a plumbing problem, and were told they couldn’t be moved because the ship was too full. “We had to keep the balcony door open in 40-degree weather the entire cruise just so we could breathe and not smell the horrible odours,” said Brenda.

On the last night of that cruise, the couple got a letter from the cruise ship’s hotel director – apologising for the problems and offering a 20% discount on their next cruise, which they thought was fair and thus booked their next cruise with Royal Caribbean. When Brenda got home she wrote her usual review on Cruise Critic, which sparked a lot of feedback from other cruisers. The couple soon received a phone call from Bill Weeks, executive assistant in customer service at RCI, offering them $500 on top of their 20% discount, which, of course, they accepted and posted this experience on the Cruise Critic forum.

However, some forum members were beginning to express their discontent at the way the couple had complained their way to an unfair discount and posting their experiences – possibly teaching others cruisers how to ‘scam’ the line. Some even contacted the line’s president and chief executive, Adam Goldstein to complain about the Morans getting any compensation at all. Following this, the couple then received a phone call from Bill Weeks’ boss who was unhappy about the negative review posted on the forum, asking Brenda to take down the review immediately. Brenda refused.

This was followed by another call the following day, informing the Morans that they were banned for life from the cruise line – which they did not believe was true until they received an official letter confirming the ban.

Michael Sheehan, Royal Caribbean’s associate vice president of corporate communications said that since 2004 the couple had sailed six cruises on two of the company’s lines. “On all but one of those sailing the Morans felt there were a variety of service failures they experienced,” he said. “In a small number of cases we agreed and compensated them appropriately. In most cases, however, we disagreed. Having concluded that we are unable to meet the expectations of the Morans, we have told them that they would be best served by sailing with another company.”

Interesting i cauhgt the noro virus on the Freedom of the Seas in January 2008 and was quarantined to my cabin as well as my wife for two days. The compensation we got was very low on 150$ each, when you consider i was in hospital and then quaranined. We must say we are booked on the Independence of th Seas in September, we were orignally booked on the Azmara Journey and tried to use our compensation vouchers but rcl/CEL SAID AND STATED THAT AMZARA LINE is not part of their company. Anw way we did end up on the Captains Table for dinner on our 2 nd week. Shame due to another illness i have changed to the IOSeas and RCL have been excellent and given us a transfer so as not to loose our deposit and the voucher was accepted off the cruise and oneof them as on board credit. This will be our twelve cruise with them, but can confirm will not be going on the Oasis it looks too large. The Brillance the Jewel are our favorite

I recently cruised on NCL line and found it not up to my standards or likeing. Consequently, I will never cruise that line again, after only ONE trip. After 8 cruises, ??? they are just looking for hand-outs. Nothing else is justifiable. Hooray RC Cruises for taking a stand.

Being a hotel owner myself you can be unluckly and get this solt of person who considers it part of the deal to moan all the time the cruise line did the right thing, but how would you like raw sewerage in your cabin???

As others have said, difficult to judge without all the facts. Finally found one of Brenda Moran's reviews (http://reviews.iserver.net/Celebrity/Constellation25.htm). It's not all negative or nasty but the sytle does suggest the author has certain issues and at times is downright strange. There is probably a fair amount going on here

Difficult one this as professional complainers are a nuisance but the difficulty is that if you have a serious grievance and little or no notice is taken then how would you feel! I believe that standards within cruising are falling and probably most cruisers of a certain age remember how things were and find it a little difficult to accept how things are becoming. Remember as with all things service should be paramount and whilst not every complaint is justifiable or warranted many complaints are dismissed or not taken seriously enough. It would appear that they were banned primarily because they wrote a review documenting their experiences. If this was an accurate description of events is there really any justification for their being banned. We are all reading cruisers reviews on this site and whilst I think we all take bad reviews with a liitle sceptiscm, cruise lines should be able to ignore one off bad reviews and dismiss them if their overall ratings are generally high. What would happen if after a particularly bad cruise, for whatever reason, a much larger number of people wrote bad reviews about an RCI ship would they start to ban a large numbers of passengers?? RCI have effectively silenced criticsm from this quarter by banning the couple from their entire fleet purely because it was one couple and this would cause RCI least trouble. Remember in the beginning RCI offered the discount and then increased it after the cruise review was posted. Would you not accept a discount if it were offered to you

If people dont complain on Cruise Reviews about things that are not right on the ship after already complaining to the Ships Manager and nothing being done the only way to let others know of the bad service is by posting it on Cruise Review warning others what they have to look forward to. But if the matter is dealt with straight away they should forget about it as it had been seen to. No need to keep going on and on about it.
