Q:
We are taking an RCI Asia cruise in Feb 09. This takes in Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and China. Has anyone done a similar cruise that can advise on currency and visas: e.g. will US dollars be acceptable in most countries or will we have to take currency for each country?; is it advisable to obtain visa prior to departure or can they be obtained on board? Any other tips and information will be helpful. Thanks.

I am going on a cruise on Sept 20th from Anchorage on the Diamond Princess travelling to China and Vietnam and have had to get a visa for China for myself and my husband, which we have just applied for, we had to have it even if we were not getting off the ship. The visa for Vietnam can be obtained on board. Hope this helps you.

Singapore, No visa required (stay up to 14 days)with a UK passport. Thailand waive the visa for cruise ships. Thai Baht is a very poor currency, with a poor rate of exchange in the UK. Personally I take minimal from here & use a debit card in the hole in the wall over there to top up my needs. You get a better deal that way. The local traders in Phuket prefer/insist on Baht but the bigger stores, we found, will take USD & SIN$.

LAST year, the visas for Cambodia and Vietnam were available on board for $25/$28. For mainland China you were covered by a group visa. They have not yet decided on the policy for this year. US$ will be accepatable in most countries but I would take SIN$ and HK$ and THB personally too.
