I would agree with the choice of the Town Quay as the best vantage point, where you can almost touch the ships as they pass. However I was disappointed on my last visit there, which was to show a visitor the Victoria in port, to find that our view was blocked by some very ugly galvanised fencing cutting off the end of the Quay to the public. This was apparently due to some unstable masonary in the area or something. Since this is one of the most popular places to view from, I hope that this has been removed before the Taylors family sail. Just to add a footnote. If rather than waving off family members, you are interested in getting some serious photos, then Hythe Marina Village on the opposite shore of the river is your best bet. You are slightly further from the ships there, but you won't be taking pictures directly into the sun as you will be from the Town Quay side. The angles are also slightly better if you want to get a good profile of the ships either in port or leaving. Happy cruising.
